Can you plug into the plugs underneath the car rather than the tail lights?

All the 4-way vehicle wiring harnesses like the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56272 that fit your 2018 Ford Edge will require connecting directly to the tail light connectors. If you plan to run your 4-way permanently outside your Edge I recommend using either the 2" Curt Easy Mount Bracket # C58001 or 1-1/4" Curt Easy Mount Bracket # C58002 to secure the 4-way on the end of your receiver.

If you do not already have a receiver I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C78KR. This class III receiver has a 2" x 2" opening which does offer a wider selection of accessories and ball mounts for your Edge. It uses a hidden cross tube to give your receiver a cleaner more factory look.
