How do I pick what diameter trailer brake I need and are all mounting plates the same I have 14” wheels

Great question.

You'll first choose the hub/drum which is compatible with the bearings that your spindle uses. From there, you'll choose the brake assembly that's compatible with the hub/drums.

You'll also want to choose a hub/drum with a wheel bolt pattern that's compatible with your existing wheels.

Given that you have a 14 inch wheel, your axle capacity could range from 2000 to 3500 lbs with the 3500 lb being the most likely.

The best place to start would be to pull one of your hubs and identify the reference numbers etched onto the side of the cages for the inner and outer wheel bearings. If you have a L618149 inner/L44649 outer bearing, you have a standard 3500 lb axle which uses a 10 inch hub/drum and brake assembly, and your wheels likely have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern.

If this is the case, you'd use hub/drums like part # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K along with a 10 inch brake assembly such as part # 23-26-27. The brake assemblies are compatible with a standard 4 bolt brake mounting flange.

If your current hubs use a different inner/outer bearing, please reply with the reference numbers on them or measure the inside diameter of the inner and outer bearing and I'd be happy to make some recommendations.
