Tabs Added To Trailer Frame To Restrict Travel Of Slipper Spring Equalizers

Updated 09/21/2021 | Published 09/18/2021

Question:

I bought a 1996 Gore horse trailer that has two 8000lbs dexter axels with slipper springs. There is a piece of steel strap welded to the frame over the front of the equalizers restricting movement of about 1/2”. Why is this there? Is it necessary ? Should it be removed? It seems it would bottom out.

The only reason that I can see that those tabs would have been welded onto your frame is to restrict articulation of the equalizer. And the only reason I would see anyone putting those on is if the articulation was causing the tires to contact the fenders of the trailer.

I feel that they should be removed to allow for the suspension to be able to articulate properly as you are driving. The tabs restrict the suspension travel causing more weight to be transferred to one axle when you are driving over bumps or curbs for entering different parking lots. You will want to examine your suspension to determine if these were added to prevent a tire from rubbing through the full travel of the suspension as that will be a separate issue that will need addressed.
