Carrying Kayak On Roof Vs. Truck Bed with Malone Axis Truck Bed

Question:

Is it necessary when carrying a kayak to mount the front of the kayak on the roof? Can I not just put the kayak in the truck bed, leave the tailgate open, and have the rear end of the kayak sit on the hitch-mounted load extender? 2021 Chevy Colorado WT 4 door long standard bed

Expert Reply:

The kayak can indeed be carried in the truck bed and then the bow/stern secured with a load extender like the Malone Axis Truck Bed and Roof Load Extender part # MPG907. The only downside of this option as opposed to securing the kayak to the roof is that you lose bed space. The great thing about the Malone Axis Truck Bed and Roof Load Extender is that is can be used when securing the kayak to the roof as well if you change your mind.
