Question:
I have a 2019 Subaru Outback not touring model. I plan to carry two kayaks 34inch and 35inch kayak width. The existing manufacturer built-in crossbars are too short. Can I use the 78inch Yakima HD Crossbars? The total weight of the kayaks is 135 lbs. Thanks.

Expert Reply:
As long as your 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon has the factory side rails running front to back, then you can install longer Yakima crossbars. The 78" crossbars may be too wide since you do not want to exceed the total width of your vehicle (due to safety and state laws). It looks like your vehicle is about 73" wide so I recommend cutting the 78" bars down to fit your vehicle's width.
The complete kit is as follows: Round 78" CrossBars # Y00411, RidgeLine Towers # Y00145, Adapter # Y03536, and Pads # Y00241. I attached a demonstration video for you to check out. The weight capacity of this roof rack is 165lbs but you should never exceed the weight capacity of your vehicle's roof; my research tells me if is also 165lbs.
A lightweight kayak carrier that you could use is the Rightline Gear Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs - Foam Block Style - 14-3/4" # RL100K10 (you need one kit for each kayak).
