Question:
I am in the market to buy a kayak/bike trailer. I am questioning the small tire on the Yakima and wonder how they wear. I would be taking longer trips like from PA to Florida at high speed interstate driving. What kind of track record do this smaller tires have for long lasting durability? Are there any tire upgrades? Thx

The Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer - 66" # Y08106 or 78" # Y08107 ride very well at highway speeds on long trips. These 16 inch wheels work very well at any posted highway speed in favorable conditions. Just like any trailer, you want to slow down in conditions with excessive water, snow or ice, and extreme wind. We have had very happy customers with these trailers as you can see in the customer reviews and have not had any issues with the tires. This trailer has been on the market for a long time and has a great reputation.
The spare tire # Y08121 is 16 inches diameter by 3.25 inches wide or you can get a replacement set # 8880157 as needed. There is also replacement tire # Y8880282 and inner tube # Y8880283 also available for these trailers. There are not tire upgrades available for this trailer.
We do have other trailers like the Malone MicroSportXT Trailer - Aluminum Wheels - Retractable Tongue - 13' Long - 375 lbs # MPG460XT that have more common 4.80-12 trailer wheels if you prefer. The tires are only rated for speeds up to 65 mph on this trailer as it comes from the manufacturer. If you want to upgrade them, I'd recommend the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # TT48012C rated for speeds up to 81 mph.
