Which 4-Bike Carrier Can Be Converted To A 2-Bike Carrier And Has The Ability To Be Locked?

Updated 05/04/2021 | Published 05/03/2021

Question:

hello Im looking for a 4 bike platform carrier this has me looking at the swagman xtc 4 and the Curtis platform carrier. I would like the ability to have it be a 2 bike carrier as well. can both do that? it seems like the arms lock on the curt vs a chain to go through all bikes on the swagman. the swagman has a receiver lock does the curt have the ability to lock to the receiver with a different part? overall which one do you feel is the best? thank you for your time.

The Curt 4 Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches # C18087 does have the ability to be converted to a 2-bike carrier, but the Swagman XTC4 Bike Rack for 4 Bikes - 2" Hitches # S64665 cannot do this. A Swagman 4-bike carrier that CAN be converted to a 2 bike carrier is the Swagman Quad 2+2 Bike Rack for 4 Bikes - 2" Hitches # S64FR.

When comparing the Swagman Quad 2+2 to the Curt 4-bike rack, they are very similar in the fact that they can both be converted to a 2-bike carrier and both have a weight capacity of 45lbs per bike. Both come with ratcheting hooks that lock onto the bike's frame; these upright hooks can also be folded to allow for easy loading. The main difference that the Curt can tilt back to allow access to the trunk on most vehicles even when bikes are loaded; the Swagman does not have this feature. The Swagman does come with a lock for the hitch receiver, but the Curt does not; one can be added with # SR0901 to allow the Curt to lock to the hitch receiver.

All of this being said, I think the Curt is the better option since it is the more economical option and also has the ability to tilt back without the need to unload the bikes. I attached demonstration videos for you to check out.
