Question:

I have a 2008 E350 Ford Econoline passenger van. I purchased the part listed above and I am having problems when I use the 4 to 7 adaptor that I also purchased from you at the same time. When I use the adaptor my running lights go off when I apply the brakes. The only fix I have found is to add exterior ground wire to the adaptor. This doesnt make pulling a trailer very convenient because the extra ground has to be hooked up and unhooked every time. When I am not using the adaptor and I am using the flat 4 plug all the lights work fine with no extra ground. Any suggestions?

You went the right way when you checked the ground wire first. You will need to make sure all of your ground connections are good. The ground connection at the vehicle is especially important because it must travel through the connector to the trailer frame. The connector on the trailer should be secured to a clean surface on the trailer frame and each taillight assembly must be grounded either through the mounting bolts or a separate wire from the taillight to the trailer frame. When you apply the brakes and the running lights are on that is when the amperage draw is the highest and ground problems show up at this time.

There is another possibility, but slim I believe. If your trailer has extra lighting such as running lights on the rear, top and/or sides the extra draw could be to much for the wiring harness, which is rated for 7-1/2 amps. In this case you may need to hardwire a heavy duty powered taillight converter to be able to run the trailer with extra lighting. In this case I would recommend the Heavy Duty Plug-N-Tow Short Proof Powered Taillight Converter, item # 46365, which draws power for the trailer lighting from the battery and can handle up to 24 amps. This kit includes everything needed for installation.
