Troubleshooting Coupler of Trailer that is Difficult to Unlatch
Updated 03/12/2021 | Published 03/09/2021 >
Question:
I pull a 30ft + travel trailer and the coupler is designed for a 2 and 5/8 inch ball. It is difficult to un-hitched most of the time. Is there anything I can do to make it easier?

The latching mechanism of the coupler might need to be lubricated or is possibly out of adjustment (if possible). Look underneath the coupler at the latching mechanism. If there's a nut on the side of the latch that you can see you might try backing that off a turn or so to allow the latch to not fit as tightly and have an easier time sliding off of the ball when disengaged.
You can also spray a lubricant like WD-40 on moving parts as well to help allow them to move freer.
