Updated 01/24/2013 | Published 01/22/2013

Question:

can it be used as a ladder rack. other racks say that if the object extends past the roof that it must be tied to the front and rear of the car... however this heavy duty rack does not indicate that... please advise

The Rhino Rack rack system can be used to carry ladders, as long as the weight of the ladder does not exceed the 165 lb capacity of the rack or the capacity of the vehicle roof, whichever is lower. You will need to consult your owners manual or Toyota for the capacity of the roof.

Rhino Rack does indeed highly recommend that any loads extending beyond the front or rear edge of the roof be secured to the front and rear bumper of the vehicle for the sake of safety. Tie downs that are designed for kayaks or canoes like part # TH855XT would work well, but sturdy rope would also work. Then I recommend the Malone QuickLash Hood Loops, part # MPG308 that can be closed in the hood and trunk that would provide an attachment point for whatever tie downs you decide to use. The etrailer Tie-Down Kit # e36ZR comes with both tie-downs and hood anchors. This is a good way to get both together.
