Best Way to Use a Kuat Sherpa 2.0 Bike Rack on a 2" and a 1-1/4" Receiver

Updated 11/18/2020 | Published 11/15/2020

Question:

Hi. Just had a factory 2 hitch receiver put onto our 2020 RAV4. I also have a 1.25 hitch receiver on our 2014 CX5. We want to use our Kuat Sherpa 2.0 bike rack with a 1.25 shank Is there an alternative sleeve option that I can add to the 2 hitch semi-permanently, instead of using the Kuat D101? Id like to be able to use 1.25 rack on either vehicle without having to remove/install the D101 every time we switch vehicle.

We have 2" to 1-1/4" receiver adapters that you can use on your 2020 Toyota RAV4.

As you said, the Kuat Sherpa 2.0, part # SH12P, fits a 1-1/4" receiver and can be used with the Kuat Adapter, part # D101, to fit a 2" receiver. However, if you're looking to switch between these two often, then a better option is to use a hitch adapter rather than the bike rack's shank adapter.

The Brophy Reducer, part # HT02, is exactly what you're looking for. This can be inserted into a 2" receiver and allow for 1-1/4" accessories like bike racks to fit. I've linked to a video review of this reducer for you to look at.

One thing to keep in mind about this reducer is that it will reduce your tongue weight to 300 pounds, but that's much better than other adapters on the market which reduce it by 50%. Still, 300 pounds should be more than enough for your rack and bikes.

You'll also need a 5/8 hitch pin with a clip like part # 37201074 to secure this to your receiver (use the included Sherpa pin for the rack itself). However, I highly recommend going with the Let's Go Aero Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin, part # SHP2061, since it will reduce the amount of sway that some customers have found when using the Brophy Reducer. I've linked to a video review of this pin as well.
