Question:
I like the Blue-ox BX3827 baseplate for my 2002 VW Jetta but I like the Stowmaster tow bars. It looks like the RM adaptors require one to abandon the stowmaster crossbar and connect the A-arms directly to the baseplate via the adaptors. I am looking at used Stowmaster tow bars. Will the RM-031 or RM-301-5 adaptors work with a Stowmaster 5000?

Expert Reply:
The adapters # RM-031 and # RM-031-5 do not fit the Stowmaster tow bars. The Blue Ox base plates for the 2002 VW Jetta, # BX3827, are designed for use with motor home mounted tow bars and not car mounted tow bars like the Stowmaster. If you like the Blue Ox base plates and want a used tow bar, then the compatible ones you should be looking for are the Blue Ox Aventa, Aladdin, Alpha and Allure tow bars.
Motor home mount tow bars are actually the more secure and easier to use option than vehicle mounted tow bars. The Alpha is a lower cost option, # BX7380.
You will also need a lighting solution. If you do not plan on flat towing the Jetta often, I recommend a magnetic light kit # RM-2120. If you will be towing it often then an LED light kit like # BX88267 with harness and connectors # BX8861 or # BX88254 would be the way to go.
The other option if you are set on a Stowmaster is to use the Roadmaster base plates, # 521227-3. These also have removable arms that make the base plates virtually invisible and you know they will be compatible with the Stowmaster.
Most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the easiest to set up and use is the Blue Ox Patriot, # BLU37TR proportional system. It applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking reducing wear and tear on both vehicles and it is the safest way to stop.
I have included some help links on flat towing for you. Also make sure you consult the vehicles owners manual for any additional information on recreational towing.
