Weight Distribution Hitch Recommendation for a 30 ft Camper Trailer

Question:
Hi, Wondering if you can confirm for me if Pro Series Weight Distribution - PS49583 will be the proper hitch I need for towing my 30foot pull type camper. I just purchased it used this summer and as I was taking it out to storage one of the round bars fell out twice on the way. I took a good look at it and the clip is worn and not keeping the bar in place. I went to an RV dealer hoping they could just replace the clips but was told I would need to purchase everything. The bars I have now state on them 1000 lbs. and my camper weighs 8500 lbs. dry weight. The ball is a 2 5/8 inch that is on the hitch. I think this weight distribution hitch I have is just worn out and would like to purchase this one you have available if it will work for me. I am towing this trailer with a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4, the previous owner had towed a 5th wheel with it and it is set up with the towing package, electric brake and transmission cooler. This truck has no problem towing this camper but I do feel alot sway when vehicles pass me. Would your Pro Series Weight Distribution - PS49583 work for me? or do you have any recommendations what might be the best fit? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

The most important thing to consider when picking out a weight distribution system is the tongue weight of the setup. I attached an FAQ article on how to determine tongue weight for you, but you will also need to consider the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle as tongue weight.
Typically tongue weight is between 10-15 percent of the total weight of the trailer which in your case would be between 850 lbs and 1275 lbs. If you find that you are at 850 lbs tongue weight then the Pro Series Weight Distribution Hitch # PS49583 would have enough capacity for you. However, I would recommend you still need to consider any additional weight that might be in the camper trailer when you are ready to tow.
Chances are you will need a 1,200 lb tongue weight capacity system. And since sway is a concern of yours I would recommend one with a sway control device on it. You should check out the Strait-Line Weight Distribution w Sway Control # RP66084. This unit has a 1,200 lb tongue weight capacity and a dual cam sway control system that works to proactively prevent trailer sway before it starts.
Although you have done upgrades to your truck so that it handles the weight of your trailer you should be careful not to exceed the posted weight capacities of your vehicle that are posted in the owners manual of the vehicle.
I attached an FAQ page on weight distribution systems also for you to check out.
