Question:

I have just purchased a 2005 37ft fifth wheel camper with a gross weight 12,500lbs. Previous owner had placed LT235/85-16 and are in need of replacement. I am wanting to replace the tires with the most dependable tire without having to give away my first born. Local retailers have giving me many different opinions none the same. What is my best option?

Expert Reply:

I recommend using an ST (special trailer) tire, like # AM10501. This is a load range F tire with a capacity of 3,960 pounds at 95 psi for a total capacity for 4 of 15,840 pounds.

Another option that is a little less expensive is a load range E tire, # AM10295 that you referenced rated for 3,640 pounds at 95 psi. Four of these tires on a tandem axle trailer will provide a total capacity of 14,560 pounds.

These are radial tires which will give you the best ride and longest life. Special trailer tires are designed with a thicker side wall than passenger vehicle tires because they need to handle more vertical load.

This thicker sidewall also means that you will need to always inflate the tires to the maximum psi rating as indicated on the tire so that it does not get excessive heat build up. I have included a link to our tire FAQ article for you to view.
