What PSI Rating Does the Actuator Need To Be Rated for When Switching to EOH Disc Brakes

Updated 05/07/2020 | Published 05/06/2020

Question:

I have a tandem axle trailer with a TIe Down 46304 Disc Brake set on the rear axle and a surge actuator. I want to convert to Electric/Hydraulic system. The 46304 is only rated to 1000psi. If I add another 46304 set to the front axle and a Dexter 1000psi electric/hydraulic actuator would that system be workable. I see that most disc brake systems recommend 1500psi. My other option is add 4 new disc brakes and go with the 1600psi Dexter actuator. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

The system requirements for disc brakes are different than the system requirements for drum brakes. Disc brakes require a higher psi rating of 1600+ in order to achieve optimal performance whereas drum brakes only require 1000 psi. I would be willing to bet you will notice an increase in stopping power if you were to switch to a 1,600 psi actuator since you have disc brakes but nevertheless you'll need to obtain one rated for this when you convert to electric over hydraulic. I recommend the Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Disc Brakes part # K71-651.
