The brake controller receives a signal from the vehicle brakes through the red wire that enters the rear of the brake controller. Use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test the red wire. When you press the brake pedal, you should get voltage on that wire. If you do not, first check the brake light bulbs on the truck to make sure none of them are burned out (including the 3rd brake light). Replace bulbs as needed. If all checks out there, you will need to check the fuse box under the hood. You will need to check your owner's manual for the fuse location of the CHMSL or tow package fuses, and check or replace them as needed.
You should also make sure that the brake controller is installed so that it is parallel to the direction of travel and that the gain on the controller is not turned all the way down.
If you cannot find a burned out fuse, please email me back and we will explore some other options. I've linked you to some FAQ articles that you might find helpful.
