Can I Upgrade Leaf Springs on Utility Trailer With 3500 Lb Axle

Question:

Hey etrailer, I seem to be needing new springs, as mine are sagging after years of use. I have a 6.5foot x 12foot utility trailer with a 3500lb axle. Can I upgrade the springs to 2500lb ones instead of 1750lb they are the same size? Would that benefit the trailer if I am already spending money on new springs they are similarly priced? I know I can still only haul 3500lb as that is what the axle is rated and I am not looking to haul more than that. Thanks!

You can upgrade the 1750 lb leaf springs to 2500 lb leaf springs. You do want to keep in mind that the ride may be a bit stiffer since you are upgrading your springs to a higher capacity. Like you mention upgrading the springs will not give you a higher weight capacity because the axle is still rated for 3500 lbs. The only benefit may be that the springs last a bit longer because of the higher capacity.

The new springs do need to be the same measurement spring eye to spring eye accounting for the amount of sag of your old ones. To get the correct measurement, jack up the trailer and measure the spring eye to eye. For example the double eye spring part # e27SR is rated for 2,000 lbs and measures 26" long. I have attached a diagram for your reference.
