The best way to add clearance when towing with a truck that has it's tailgate down is to go with a longer ball mount like the # D-26 that you referenced which is overall 12-5/8 inches. You can use hitch extenders but they end up cutting the capacity of the hitch they are installed by 50 percent so they aren't my favorite solution to recommend.
