How to Change Weight Rating of Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Hitch

Question:

Am I in for any problems or difficulties if I use the 10,000 lb Equal-I-zer hitch to pull an r-pod trailer whose max axle weight is 3500 lbs? Tongue weight is a max of 350-400 lbs and the hitch is rated for 1000 lbs. Attaching the hitch to a Honda Ridgeline. Ideally I should use a smaller rated hitch, but would this one work okay?

Weight distribution systems like the Equal-i-zer # EQ37100ET really do need to be matched to the trailer's actual fully-loaded tongue weight (TW). Using a 1000-lb system with a smaller travel trailer like your R-Pod can result in jumpy and unpredictable handling from the trailer and this is not recommended.

The good news is that it is easy to change the rated capacity of the system by changing out just the two spring bars; you do not need to replace the whole setup. You can replace the 1000-lb bars with # EQ90-01-0499 for TW up to 400-lbs or with part # EQ90-01-0699 for TW between 400 and 600-lbs.

The ideal situation is that the sum of your fully-loaded trailer TW, plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your Ridgeline, falls in the middle of the system's operating range. If your actual loaded TW is 400-lbs and you were to have a 100-lb generator in the back of the vehicle your total TW would be 500-lbs and you'd want to use kit # EQ90-01-0699.

To ensure you get this right I recommend using the etrailer Tongue Weight Scale # e99044 which eliminates guesswork.
