Why Do I Need 5 or 6 Inches Of Clearance Between Trailer and Bed Rails
Published 06/14/2019 >
Question:
Hi I have a road amor trail air pivot head hitch on my fifth wheel the sliding hitch can’t be raised. Is the clearance between the bed rails and the camper still 6 inches for the sliding hitch. I currently have about 5 3/4 inches should I raise the pin box or is the enough clearance.

The general rule is 5 or 6 inches clearance needed between the trailer loft and the bed rails is mostly to do with situations when the fifth wheel may take a deep dip like a pot hole or entering a steep drive. Without proper clearance the bed rails and trailer loft may make contact causing damage. The slider provides clearance for turning so the trailer doesn't hit the cab of the truck so you still need bed rail clearance even with the slider.
The 5 3/4 inches of clearance should be fine but you can raise the pin box just to be safe. Unless raising the pin box makes your fifth wheel not level with the tow vehicle then you should keep it where it's at.
