How to Connect Vehicle with 7-Way to Trailer with 5-Pole Flat Wiring for Surge Brake Lockout

Question:

I have a truck with a 7 way connector. My trailer has a four way plus an additional wire for the surge brakes solenoid. How do I connect the two?

The best long-term wiring solution for connecting your vehicle that has a 7-way and your trailer that has a 5-pole flat is to install a 7-way male plug on the trailer wiring. This lets you avoid adapters like # 787196 which can become unreliable over time.

We have parts like # PK12706, # A7WCB and # A7WCB (and others) shown on the linked page that connect to the trailer's existing wiring to give you a plug that directly matches the 7-way on your Pilot.

Another better option is to add a 7-way/junction box # HS381-9000 that mounts on the trailer. Your existing trailer wires will connect to posts inside the box using ring terminals # 44-5310A. The included plug and cable has a yellow wire that will carry the reverse light function from the Pilot to the trailer to operate the solenoid in your brake actuator. Please see the linked photo.

The advantage of the junction box over the plug is that if you ever need to replace any damaged wires on the trailer you'll already have a handy protected place to do that. I recommend this over the plug only but either will work for you. The linked article on trailer wiring will help you match up the wires by their functions.
