Compatibility of Load Range E Upgrade on Current Wheels of 2008 Sundowner Horse Trailer

Updated 05/23/2019 | Published 05/22/2019

Question:

From D to E Rated Tires for a Horse Trailer I have a 2008 Sundowner Horse Trailer equipped with 15 inch wheels 6 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern. The rims are weighted at 2600 pounds each. The current tires I use are ST225 75R 15D tires. Im interested in replacing the current tires with similar sized, but E rated ones. Can I apply E rated tires to my current rims? The added weight and speed rating of E Load tires will give me additional peace of mind while traveling with my horses. I recognize, of course, that the heavier rated tire doesnt enable the trailer to carry more weight.

The Provider ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # TR225LRE you mentioned would be an upgrade from your current tires. The tires are rated for up to 2,830 lbs at 80 psi, but your rims rated for 2,600 lbs will reduce the total weight capacity to 2,600 lbs max at that 80 psi. That combination would provide an extra 60 lbs from each tire but you will also get a higher ply rating, so a stronger tire with a thicker sidewall for more durability.

An even better option would be to upgrade your tires and wheels which is what I recommend. For that upgrade, the Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 15" Silver Mod Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - Load Range E # LHAW124 is an excellent option. This wheel is rated for the 2,830 lbs as well as the tire. This comes ready to install and also includes a 5-year warranty on the tire and 1-year on the wheel. This will give you the additional peace of mind you are seeking with stronger tires and stronger wheels.

The Provider tires are rated for speeds up to 81 mph and the Westlakes are rated for 75 mph. Both are radial tires for highway driving to run cooler and provide better traction.
