Using Hitch-Mounted Bike Rack on 2019 Subaru Outback with Rear Sensors

Updated 05/07/2019 | Published 05/05/2019

Question:

I have a 2019 Subaru Outback and would like a rear bike rack kept on most of the summer months. I would like a unit that would not interfere with the sensor system. When the bikes are loaded on the rack I could disable the BSD system and does this entire situation present any warranty issues with Subaru. What are your recommendations and thoughts how to manage this problem

The Saris SuperClamp EX 2 Bike Platform Rack # SA4025F that you are looking at will give you the best chance to avoid tripping the rear sensors on your 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon because it doesn't feature a center mast, however in all honesty due to where the sensors are located on the Outback it's still very likely that the sensors will detect the rack when mounted, especially when it's folded up against the vehicle. The same will be true with any hitch-mounted bike rack or accessory.

As you mentioned your only option to completely avoid this will be to turn the sensors off when backing up with the rack mounted. This shouldn't have an effect on the Outback's warranty but you will definitely want to check with a local Subaru dealer or your owner's manual to be sure.

I have included a short video demonstration on the Saris SuperClamp EX that you can check out as well.
