I looked up the towing capacity of your 2016 Ram 1500 with a 3.6 liter V6 and the capacity is 7,140 lbs. If you are without a trailer hitch currently the etrailer hitch part # E98852 is a confirmed fit and would work great. It installs very easily by attaching to the bumper beam. The truck would have a factory 7-way so installing a brake controller would be pretty easy. A brake controller is designed to activate the brakes of the trailer so that your towing setup can safely come to a stop.
The brake controller I recommend is the Prodigy P3 part # 90195 because this brake controller senses the amount of braking your tow vehicle is applying and puts a proportional amount of braking on the trailer's brakes. It also has a display that uses full words instead of codes that would have to be deciphered. It's our best selling brake controller because of how well it works, how reliable it is, and how easy it is to use.
To install it requires just the install harness part # 3024-P and you'd be set. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well.
Since you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
