Recommended Trailer Towing Setup for 2018 Ford Escape

Published 01/30/2019

Question:

Our 2018 Escape does not have the tow package. No hitch no wiring. We want to pull our small teardrop so we need a complete towing setup. Trailer does not have brakes - its really cute and tiny and less than 1000-lbs!

Even though your teardrop trailer is tiny I recommend using the highest capacity hitch available for your 2018 Escape, the Draw-Tite 2-inch # 75758, since this will give you more towing safety margin and not really cost much more. This hitch installs easily without drilling as you will see in the linked video. All hardware is included.

For a wiring harness for the trailer's lights I recommend the Curt 4-pole kit # C56320 because we find their wiring products to be the most reliable. Installation is mostly a plug-in process as shown in the video and I included a help article as well. I strongly recommend using dielectric grease # 11755 on the connectors when installing the harness. This will help prevent corrosion to ensure proper long-term operation of your teardrop's lights.

Towing also requires a ball mount and hitch ball. The article on ball mounts will show you how to select the one with the right amount of rise or drop, or if you want you can use a multi-part Ball Mount Kit # 989900 which includes 2 ball mounts, 2 hitch ball sizes as well as pins and clips.

For towing mirrors I like the K-Source universal fit mirror set # KS3990 for their secure ratcheting mounting system and their dual lens design.
