Converting Dodge Ram to European Wiring System on Trailer

Published 10/24/2018

Question:

The Tow Ready Tail Light Converter # 118158 referenced in your question is exactly what is needed to separate the combined brake and turn wires on the Dodge Ram so that it is compatible with European wiring systems. The running light wire will bypass the converter completely so it will not be affected. Just one converter per truck is needed. The left side turn signal/brake wire on the Ram will connect to the yellow input wire on the converter and the right turn/brake light wire will go to the green input wire. The white wire on the converter is for ground. On the output side of the converter the red will be for brake lights only, the green is for right turn only, and the yellow is for left turn only.

No problem! First, adding some load-resistors like # P230004A-2 should indeed resolve the hyperflashing you are getting with the turn signals. These will build resistance to correct the flash with those low-wattage bulbs. Now we can move to the issue you described when using the hazards with the converter installed. The brake lights flashing with the hazards is actually completely normal and there isn't really a good way to make it so the amber lights blink instead. The reason for this is that US vehicles use the brake light circuit to activate the hazards, so when the circuits are separated only the brake lights will be powered. Essentially the converter isn't able to tell the difference between the flashers and brake lights. With a converter installed the hazards will be the brake lights.
