Question:

I have 1995 Toyota T100 pickup and the flat 4 pole trailer connector was ripped off in a car wash. It also left the wiring on the truck side a little ripped apart. I purchased the replacement connector and rewired it back into the existing truck wiring color for color. Im assuming there was some kind of rewire kit already installed in the truck for the trailer such as a T-One type since I see what looks like additional connectors that tie into the stock wiring at both tail lights. I do not see any kind of box or converter. My problem is after tying in the new connector color for color everything works except the brake lights on the trailer. Im guessing I must be missing how the brake lights tie into the yellow and green. Is this typically a separate wire for each side coming off the T connectors? Its hard to understand how a common brake wire can be added into each trailer side turn lights. Any help appreciated.

The installation of a 4-flat connector such as the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118496 in your 1995 Toyota T100 is a very simple and straightforward process; it only requires plugging in the T-connectors at the taillight wiring harness. I was unable to locate what harness you ordered from us so I'm not certain what exact harness you used but the process should not be any different (see linked installation video which shows how this harness installs).

If you only cut off the connector and spliced in something like the Wiring Harness # HM48035 instead of replacing the entire harness the plug-in connectors I referred to may be what you are seeing as "additional connectors" though these should run to a converter. There are connectors running to each taillight but it should be a brown wire (that is with the yellow wire on the connectors of the # 118496) that will be for your trailer's tail lights.

It is possible that since you said the wires got ripped apart it may still be damaged so you will need to use a circuit tester such as # PTW2979 to test the connector on your '95 T100 after disconnecting it from your trailer. Check the wiring going into your harness from your tail lights to see if those wires are carrying the correct signals, if not then the issue is with the vehicle wiring. If the signals going to your harness are okay, you'll need to test the signals coming out of the harness, and if they are correct then your issue is likely going to be with the trailer side wiring.

To avoid something like this in the future I do highly recommend securing your 4-flat with Mounting Brackets # 18144 and # 18140. I've also added links to a pair of help articles on trailer wiring that you may find useful.
