What you need to do is make sure that the roller fits inside the roller bracket with some slight room so it can turn freely. Then just make sure that the replacement shaft is long enough to reach to the outsides of the bracket so that you can put the caps on it.
For example, the Yates V Keel Roller # YR5213-4P is 5" long and takes a 1/2" shaft while the 1/2" shaft # CE10701A is 6-1/4" long and comes with the pal nuts to secure it to the bracket.
