Axle Recommendation for Trailer with GVWR of 8,400 lb

Published 08/15/2018

Question:

I have a boat trailer that the plaque says GWVR 8400. Its around 20 years old with galvanized axles. I measured the axle and they are 3inch square. The front axle is badly rusted and with my boat on it the front tires are wearing on inside which leads me to believe the axle is bowed under weight so I want to change them both out. There are no springs on the trailer so they must be torsion axles. My boat is somewhere around 7000 Lbs fully fueled. What axles should I be installing?, if I install two 3500 Lb axles does that allow me to carry 7000 Lbs, should I be going for 5000 Lb or 6000 Lb axles to give me capacity?

You'd want to go with two axles that have at least the capacity you'll need combined. We don't offer any square axles and we don't have any torsion axles, but we do carry the Timbren Axle Less systems like the part # ASR5200S01 which would work well. The price is a bit high on these so if you wanted to go with a standar style axle you'd need to get the hub face to hub face dimension and the capacity needed and find a local trailer shop who can order you in custom axles.
