Can a 2015 Ram 2500 Carry a Golf Cart in the Bed While Towing a 7,200 lb Trailer

Published 08/15/2018

Question:

I need to tow my camper with the tailgate down so that I can haul my golf cart in the back of my truck. I have a 2015 Ram 2500 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel that is set up to tow 17,100 LBS. I have a hitch extension bar that is rated at 10,000 LBS. the camper that I will be towing is 6700 LBS empty and probably around 7200 loaded for a beach trip. Your advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Expert Reply:

Since most hitch extenders reduce the weight capacity of a trailer hitch in half that means the towing capacity of your 2015 Ram 2500 would be reduced to 8,550 lbs. This leaves you with 1,350 lbs of cushion with your fully loaded trailer.

To determine if your golf cart is pushing you over the limits you will need to find the GVWR of your Ram (can be found on the sticker on your driver's side door jamb) and then subtract the curb weight of the pickup along with the weight of passengers, cargo, the golf cart, and your loaded trailer. If you come out with a positive number then you should be good to go. If that number ends up in the negative then you will be overloading your pickup.
