We do have everything you need to install your Curt Venturer Brake Controller # C74VV to your 2001 Dodge Dakota without the factory tow package.

If you don't yet have a trailer connector at the rear of the truck, you will need to start with a 4-Way connector. For this I recommend the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Wiring Harness # HM42115. This custom harness is confirmed to fit your Dakota and will install by plugging directly into factory ports behind the rear bumper. I have attached the installation instructions to assist.

Then with the 4-Way installed (or if you already have one) you will need to use the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7 to convert it to a fully functional 7-Way. This kit includes everything needed to accomplish this along with the additional wiring and circuit breakers needed to install the Curt brake controller. I have attached the detailed installation instructions for this kit that you can use for reference.

We do not have a wiring diagram available for your Dodge Dakota. When installing the brake controller, you will want to make sure that the red wire from the controller connects to the cold side of the brake light switch on the truck. This is the wire above the brake pedal that ONLY receives power with the brake pedal depressed, and no power with any other function. You will want to use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to determine the correct wire. Based on my research, it appears this wire might be white/tan on your Dakota, so you can begin by testing this one.
