Question:
I have a 2017 Dodge Journey with the I-4 engine option, I am looking for a small utility trailer for a mattress and a small 200-275lb scooter. It would be used with a class three hitch. I’m purchasing an after market hitch from amazon. It would be the Reese towpower 97208 class three custom fit hitch with a two inch square receiver opening. I’m not entirely sure how that translates, due to this being my first time towing and using a trailer. Any trailer choice advice or trailer sellers would be greatly appreaciated.

We actually might have an enclosed trailer that will work nicely for your application with the Detail K2 Mighty Multi A-Frame Utility Trailer # K2MMT5X7. This enclosed trailer will attach to a 2 inch hitch ball and features a GVWR (the most it can weigh when fully loaded) of 2,090 pounds. It will provide you with an 88 inch long, 52 inch wide bed for your mattress and scooter.
I have attached a short video demonstration on this trailer that you can also check out.
If you find that this trailer isn't quite the right size for your cargo, I simply recommend determining the space you are needing for your mattress and scooter (along with any other cargo you might transport) and finding a trailer that meets those space requirements. It's also a good idea to check the owner's manual for your Dodge Journey to verify its towing capacities.
If you are still looking for a hitch, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75648. This Class III hitch is confirmed to fit your vehicle and will use existing holes in its frame for a no-drill installation. I have attached an installation video that you can use for reference.
In addition to a trailer hitch you will also need a wiring harness if you don't already have one. I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118567 if your Dodge Journey doesn't have LED lights or the Curt # C56330 if you do have LED lights. These are both custom harnesses that will install by simply plugging into factory ports located behind the driver and passenger side tail lights. They will provide you with a 4-Way connector that will connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights.
Lastly, you will need a ball mount and hitch ball. I have attached a great article that explains how to choose the correct ball mount for your setup to keep the trailer level, along with a link that will take you to our available selection. I have also included a couple articles on trailer towing that you might find helpful.
