DOES RED WIRE SUBSTITUTE FOR A BLACK WIRE

For trailer 7-ways there are two wiring color standards that are commonly seen. I attached a picture that shows the difference. Typically red and black are not interchanged though. Sometimes red and yellow are for left turn/stop signal.
That said not all people will use standard trailer wiring colors so you might have non standard colors used.
