Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch For Trailer With Surge Brakes

Updated 05/07/2025 | Published 05/02/2025

Question:

Which Weight Distribution hitch ideally with sway control you would recommend for this actuator? The actuator is bolt on and doubles the height of most of the front part of tongue, which seems to too tall for any WD hitch.

Hello Jason, thanks for reaching out. An Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System is what I recommend for that since they are surge brake compatible. If you can tell me the GVWR or tongue weight of your camper I can recommend the correct WD hitch.

Also, a lot of surge brake trailers have a straight tongue instead of an A-frame. If your trailer has a straight tongue you will need to add a Pole-Tongue Adapter part # EQ95-01-5950.

Let me know your GVWR and I can tell you which WD hitch will be correct.

GVWR of the EZ boat trailer is 9500#, tongue weight is 600#. The actuator comes with the boat trailer. With the actuator bolted on the straight trailer tongue, the adapter has to be installed way back, behind the actuator such that the spring arms of a WD system are not long enough to reach. The bracket of the adapter doesn't seem to be able to be mounted on the actuator plus the tongue: it's too tall for the bracket of an adapter, and has moving pieces on the top of the actuator anyway.

@JohnsonC Ah ok yes you are right about the drop on the coupler. It would need to be replaced with a straight tongue coupler like part # T4750500. Then the pole tongue adapter would be needed for non A-frame trailers. There would be no way to modify the WD system to work with a drop coupler.
