My 1973 travel trailer does not have a breakaway braking system. Is this something I am required to install?

In order to determine if a breakaway system is required on your trailer you will need to contact your local DMV. This will vary from state to state. However, it is a good ideal to add a breakaway system regardless of your state's regulations as they will help to protect others on the road and your trailer in the event of an accident.
Breakaway systems are relatively inexpensive and can easily be installed with minimal effort. I recommend the Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit part # 20099 which is very easy to use and comes with everything you need for installation for the exception of common wiring connectors like part # DW05744-5. If you would like to learn more about this system you can take a look at the review/install video I have attached for you.
