Question:
Question about the SMI brake sys for my 2018 Jeep Cherokee trail hawk. Instruction show wires going from the rear of RV to a light monitor in the vehicle. What is this for. I dont want to cut into my RV wiring if possible. Is there any other unit that will work. I have active brake sys on my jeep vacuum assist.

It sounds like you are referring to the "Monitor Light" that is installed in the towed vehicle for the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System # SM99251 that you referenced. This bright LED strip is important and should be kept in your line of site, as it indicates that the towed vehicle's brakes are engaged. If you are pulling your Jeep and see this light illuminated in your rear view mirror when it shouldn't be (you aren't braking), you will want to stop immediately, as it indicates the brakes on the vehicle are engaged for some reason.
This LED strip will be wired into the cold side of the brake light switch on your Jeep, which is the wire under the brake pedal that ONLY receives power when the brakes are applied. You do not need to tap into the RV wiring for this. SMI does suggest an option of running a wire to the front of the RV for an additional monitor light, but this is not required.
I have attached the complete installation instructions, along with an installation video on the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee that you can use for reference.
