I spoke with my contact at Roadmaster and he stated that the Falcon Tow Bar 5250 is compatible with the XL Base Plates, # 4408-1, for the 2011 Ford Edge. Please note that the base plates will only work if the vehicle DOES NOT have adaptive cruise control.
Adaptive cruise control uses a forward facing radar that detects vehicles in front of you and adjusts the cruise control speed so that the Edge remains at a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
If the vehicle does have adaptive cruise control, you will need to use EZ plates, # 524426-1. The tow bar will fit the EZ style base plates as well.
Detailed installation instructions are included with the base plates.
In addition to the base plates and tow bar, you will also need safety cables, lighting, and a supplemental braking system. For safety cables, I recommend the Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables, # RM-643. The coiled design helps to keep the cables from touching the ground.
For lighting you can use a magnetic kit like # RM-2120, or wire the vehicle with diodes using Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit, # RM-154. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation of this kit for you to view.
Most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being towed. The easiest to use and install is the Roadmaster Even Brake, # RM-9400. This is a proportional style braking system that engages the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking.
I have included a link to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing.
