Question:
Id like to put 16inch wheels and ST235/80r16 tires on my Harbor Freight folding trailer. Mine is the lighter 1200 lb version. Will an upgrade to a 2000 lb axle handle these wheels and tires, or do I need to go to a 3500 axle? Also, is a 60inch width the right size to provide the clearance I need for the tires?

To put ST235/80R16 tires like the Provider ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 16" White Mod Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - LR E # TA39VR onto your Harbor Freight Trailer, you would need to upgrade the hubs of your axle to 6 on 5-1/2 inch as that or 8 on 6-1/2 inches are the two bolt patterns available for that size tire and wheel. That would require a minimum axle size of 3500 lbs like # T3584F-8974 and add hubs like the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 3,500-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 6 on 5-1/2 # AKIHUB-655-35-EZ-K.
We do not carry a 60 inch width axle, but we do have the axle-less option # ASR3500S05 which can fit custom sizes. This will work with the hubs and wheels/tires listed above. You will want to make sure your frame can handle the capacities you will be putting on your axle, springs, hubs, and wheels as well.
These upgrades if your frame can handle the weight will definitely require changing your fenders as well to provide clearance as you need about 4 inches for suspension travel with most systems from the top of the tire.
