Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for a 2007 Jeep Liberty 4x4

Updated 04/28/2011 | Published 04/26/2011

Question:

Im plan to tow a 4000lb pop-up trailer this summer so need a class III hitch for my 07 liberty 4wd. My question is what else do I need like wire or something? And is a brake controller necessary? I kind of like this item because it has a video to show installed on a Jeep Liberty. But dont know what kind of wire do I need. Thanks for your help.

You can certainly use the Curt Trailer Hitch # 13044, that you have referenced on your 2007 Jeep Liberty. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view along with the video that you have mentioned.

In terms of wiring, there are a couple of options. If your Jeep did not come with a tow package, you will use wiring # 118524. If it did come with a tow package, use # 118381. Depending on what kind of trailer connector the trailer has, you may need to add an adapter or additional parts may be needed. If the trailer has electric brakes, you should install a brake controller on the trailer.

Once you know what type of connector the trailer has, I can help you to determine what, if anything, is needed for the Jeep.

In addition to the wiring and trailer hitch, you will also need a ball mount, ball, and pin and clip. The recommended ball mount is # EA40. For a ball, there are 3 options depending on the coupler size on the trailer. For a 1-7/8 inch diameter use # 19260. For a 2 inch diameter, use # 19247. And for a 2-5/16 inch diameter, use # 63847. You will need pin and clip # PC3.
