Trailer Brakes Not Working Properly After Replacing Brakes and Drum

Question:

Hi I just installed new backing plates on a single axle travel trailer. All new brakes and one new drum. Brakes will now hardly stop the trailer on full output from factory brake controller on a dodge 1500 2015. Ive checked amp draw at each magnet and at max output 2.7 volts in light trailer setting. On heavy trailer setting I only get 2.0 amps on high 10 setting. When I deadman the brakes on the trailer with my trailer testing tool a wired truck plug for testing without a truck, I get 3.3 amp per magnet. Have you had this situation before or any suggestions to check next.? Thanks

There are a few things I recommend checking on your new trailer brake assemblies that may be leading to the poor voltage and performance you are experiencing.

First, check to make sure the ground wires are securely attached to bare metal portions of the trailer frame. Ensure that these areas are free of corrosion or debris. A bad or weak ground can cause the insufficient braking power you are seeing.

Next, I recommend adjusting the brake assemblies again. You can use a brake adjustment tool to turn the starwheel on the adjuster to expand the brake shoes until the wheel is difficult to turn by hand. Then you will back off in the other direction about 10 clicks until the brakes drag just slightly. You will want to make sure all the brake assemblies are adjusted in the same manner.

Also check wiring on both the trailer and tow vehicle to make sure there are no damaged wires or bad connections. I have attached an article on troubleshooting brake controllers that include possible issues and testing procedures for you to check out as well.
