Question:
Ive seen reviews elsewhere saying this strap loosens while in use. Is there reason not to use a ratchet mechanism in place of the one being used?

You can indeed use a different strap, other than # 18050, if you want to. It needs to be a rigid strap, one that doesn't stretch. A ratchet strap can work but you have to be careful not to overtighten it which could damage the vehicle or bike rack. I recommend ratchet strap # EM34423 because it retracts automatically and has coated hooks to protect the vehicle and bike rack.
