It sounds like your boat trailer simply does not have quite enough stopping power when you are applying the brakes from your tow vehicle. This will certainly result in the back and forth slamming/jerking you are experiencing. I do recommend adding disc brakes to the rear axle of your trailer. Doing this should greatly reduce these symptoms.
In order to choose the right disc brake assembly for your trailer, you will need to know the axle capacity, wheel bolt pattern and the part numbers from the existing bearings and seals. For example, the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35DS has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, a # L68149 inner bearing and a # L44643 outer bearing. It fits axles with a 3,500 pound capacity.
For brake lines, I recommend using the Redline Hydraulic Line Kit # 9579-01 to connect to the rear axle brakes on your trailer.
I have attached a link that will take you to our selection of disc brake assemblies as well as an article on adding disc brakes that you may find helpful.
