Question:

I'm interested in the Pilot brake controller. Will this work? Can you give me everything I need for the installer including the 7-way connector for my 2008 Subaru Outback?

The best brake controller for your 2008 Subaru Outback is the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This brake controller is similar in size to many others, but the functions are much easier to understand with the LCD screen. This controller runs constant diagnostics and will allow you to see issues without needing to decipher codes. It is customizable to driver perferences and has 3 levels of boost.

For your 2008 Outback, you will need to use the Universal Brake Controller Wiring Kit # ETBC7. This will give you the 7-way trailer connector and the wiring, connectors, and circuit breakers needed to add a brake controller. If you don't have the 4-way, you can use the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118461 to get the 4-way to start this installation.

The Pro Series Pilot 2-6 Brake Electronic Brake Controller - Time Delayed # 80550 will work with your 2008 Subaru Outback. It is a very basic controller that won't have the bells and whistles, but will be functional for pulling your trailer. Due to your desire for a small controller, your choice of the Pilor will work well. This unit comes with a standard mount, but there is a mounting kit # 5298 if you are interested. The manufacturer recommends using the Pulse Preventer for Electric Brake Controllers # 5501 to prevent trailer brake pulsing when the hazard lights on your vehicle are needed. For the wiring, you will first need the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118461 to get a 4-way flat trailer connector. Then you will need to add the Universal Wiring Kit for Trailer Brake Controllers # ETBC7. This kit will use that 4-way connection and give you the 7-way socket along with the wiring, connectors, and circuit breakers you need to wire your brake controller. You will need to connect the 12V power wire, the reverse function wire, and the brake controller wire. This will help you connect your brake controller and then you just need to connect the cold-side tail light wire, the ground, and the power in. The blue wire is your brake controller power out to your 7-way socket. It really is an easy install and I've attached a video as well as an article to walk you or your installer through the process.
