How to Determine Axle Capacity on an Unknown Trailer with No Markings
Question:
I cant find anything identifying the trailer. I dont know the year, make or model. It is a 300 lb single axle trailer and the tires are 4.80-8 in size, load rating B with a maximum load of 558 lbs/265kg. Bearing numbers L44610 and L44649. According to this information, how much weight would this trailer pull/hold safely? I would be grateful for your help! Regards

Most trailer axles will have an ID tag or sticker located on the axle that will have information like manufacturer and weight capacity. However, over time the numbers on these IDs will wear off or even fall off the axle completely.
If the axle is missing its ID tag or sticker, then it is possible to identify weight capacity by the measuring the diameter of the axle tube. I have listed the typical axle weight capacities based on axle tube diameter:
- 1,000-lb - 2,000-lb Axles: 1-1/2 inch - 1-3/4 inch diameter
- 3,500-lb Axles: 2-3/8 inch diameter
- 6,000-lb - 7,200-lb Axles: 3 inch diameter
- 8,000-lb Axles: 3-1/2 inch diameter
- 9,000-lb Axles: 4 inch diameter
- 10,000-lb Or more axles: 5 inch diameter
The bearing number that you provided, # L44649, is used on a few different axles with different weight capacities. In your case, if you cannot find the ID tag, the diameter of the axle tube will be the best way identifying you axle's weight capacity.
