I did some research and from what I can see on the 2009 Toyota Matrix the rear fascia is very similar on the S and XRS models. You may find that there is a part in the center of the fascia that needs to be removed on he XRS and XR Sort models, but no trimming is required, this part should snap out of the rear fascia, if your vehicle has it installed.
The Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole Vehicle End Trailer Connector, item # 30717, can be added to your vehicle with the addition of the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring for the 2009 Toyota Matrix, item # 118460. You could then wire tie the additional wires up out of the way. If you need the additional functions of the 7-Way connector, all of the wiring and connectors needed are included in the Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, item # ETBC7. I have provided instructions for the installation of the 4-way and 7-Way connectors, and additional wiring for you along with helpful videos.
