Trailer Hitch Receiver For 2017 Subaru Forester And Max Towing Capacity

Question:
I have a 2017 Subaru Forester and I want to put a hitch on it. According to Subaru the max towing is 1500, your website sells a hitch mount rated for 3500. Could I tow a 1750 lb trailer?

Expert Reply:
The 2017 Subaru Forester does have a max towing capacity of 1500 lbs. The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III - 2" # 75876 that is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Forester is rated to have a max capacity of 3500 lbs as you stated. In this case, as in many others, the hitch is rated higher than the vehicle itself.
Unfortunately this means that your Forester is restricted to the weakest capacity and that means you cannot tow a 1750lb trailer safely.
One of the reasons why the hitches are rated higher is so they can carry a wider variety of accessories safely like bike racks and cargo carriers.
