Question:

I have a 2010 Subaru Outback 4 cylinder with a 1 1/4 inch factory installed trailer hitch which works great for bike racks etc. I am the original owner. Is it possible to change the trailer hitch to a 2 inch like the part indicated above so that I can do light towing like with a Tear trailer weight of 1500 - 2000 lbs? I want to make sure that the integrity of the new hitch will not be compromised by removing the old trailer hitch. When it was installed they indicated after the purchase was final that it would not be changeable, but never provided any paperwork to support this. My Subaru is still going strong and while I could trade it in for a newer model - if I can get this one to work for the lightweight towing it would be great.

For your 2010 Subaru Outback, you can trade out your factory hitch without any compromising issues for the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III - 2", # 13390, which is a confirmed fit for you vehicle. Your heat shield must be modified or trimmed for this installation. Your vehicle has a towing capacity of 2700 lbs according to the online version of your owners manual so you will be able to tow a tear trailer as long as the tongue weight doesn't exceed 200 lbs which is your vehicle limit, not the hitch limit.

The # C122902 trailer hitch receiver is not a confirmed fit for your 2010 Outback.

With this trailer hitch receiver, I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # C56040 if you don't already have a trailer connection. I have attached a video of this installation for you.

For a ball mount I recommend the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches - 7,500 lbs, # 989900, which gives you two hitch balls and two draw bars of different sizes to allow you to tow your trailer level. I've attached an article to help you determine the correct ball mount for your application.
