How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon

Today on our 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon we'll be installing the CURT t-connector wiring kit, part number C56040. To begin our install we'll first need to go ahead and remove the rear cargo liner. Next we'll need to remove the center cargo tray. We'll go ahead and remove the carpeting on the drivers side. Then we'll go ahead and remove the cargo tray on the drivers side. To remove the cargo tray we'll need to remove the two fasteners securing it in position.

Once we've popped these fasteners out of place we can go ahead and sit the fasteners and cargo tray aside to be reinstalled. Next, we'll need to remove the forward foam between the rear cargo area and the second row seating. To do this we'll make sure that the second row seating is laid down and then we can pull the carpeting up and see the three fasteners securing the rear foam. Once again, we'll pop these fasteners up, remove the foam and sit both aside. Next, we'll need to remove to cargo hook anchor points.

To do that we'll remove the cap using a flat bladed screwdriver and then a 10 millimeter socket to remove the two anchor point fasteners. Next we'll need to remove the rear threshold. To remove the rear threshold we gently pull up and release the fasteners underneath. Itll be necessary to remove them from their fastening position and reinstall them into the threshold. To remove them you can use a interior trim panel tool or a flat bladed screwdriver.

Once removed we'll go and reinstall them into the threshold. Now with that done we'll sit the threshold aside for re installation later. Now with that done we pull out on the drivers side rear quarter panel and this will expose the manufacturers two port. One we locate it we can use a utility knife to cut away the manufacturers electrical tape, which is in this case is light blue and then pull the harness out so we can gain access to it. Now we'll go ahead and take our new CURT t connector and plug directly in to the manufacturers towing port.

Next we'll take the white wire with the preattached ring terminal it'll be the ground for our new converter box. Using our self tapping screw provided with the install kit we can go ahead and secure it here where the sheet metal doubles up behind the drivers side quarter panel. We'll go ahead and install the fuse into the fuse holder and install the cap. Next we'll go ahead and install the two way adhesive onto our converter box. To do that we'll peel back one side of the adhesive and secure it to the converter box and then peel back the other side and secure the converter box to a clean flat piece of sheet metal, back side of the wheel well will be a perfect location. Now with our converter box mounted we'll go ahead and route our four pole connector to the spare tire area and start reinstalling the interior trim components. Note as you install the drivers side foam cargo panel we'll make sure to route the wire up over it to the center foam cargo compartment. Now with everything reinstalled we will go ahead and put the cap on out new four pole connector. Now with that done this is where our new four pole will store when not in use. Next let's go ahead and test out new four pole connector. Using a test light on the open terminal, which will be our ground terminal, and testing the first closed terminal, which will be the running line circuit. Our second terminal will be the left turn signal and left braking and third terminal will be the right turn signal and right braking. Now that we know the new four pole connector works we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of the CURT t connector wiring kit, part number C56040, on our 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon.
