Troubleshooting Valley Journey HD Trailer Brake Controller SC Error Message

Question:

I have a journey hd 52740 just installed new complete brakes on travel trailer the controller started showing SC on display only moving forward when in reverse it works fine. The controller is installed in a 2006 Ford f-150.

The SC error code on the Valley Journey HD brake controller indicates that there is a short circuit situation. The trailer brake circuit (blue wire on the brake controller) may be shorted to ground. Since you have stated you recently replaced the brakes, it is possible that a ground wire came disconnected or was not connected during installation. I would check the grounds starting at the brake controller.

Next, I would move to the 7-Way trailer connector and make sure that it is grounded to the vehicle frame in a clean, corrosion free location. Next, check the connectors themselves for any dirt and corrosion on the pins. You can then check the trailer side connector and make sure it is properly grounded.

Last, you can check the brake magnets on the trailer brakes. There should be two wires for each brake magnet. One is for power and one is the ground. It does not matter which is power and which is ground unless otherwise noted. Make sure that the trailer brakes are grounded to the trailer frame. Once you have found the short, the brake controller will reset and the SC code will go away. I have included a link to the installation instructions below for reference.
