Expert Reply:
The Curt T-Connector harness, # C56217 and the Tekonsha T-One Connector, # 118449 are designed for a Toyota Highlander without a factory tow package. The Curt T-Connector # 56042 is designed for a Highlander that has the factory tow package installed.
If your Highlander came with a trailer hitch receiver installed, your vehicle probably has the tow package. If you are still not for certain you can contact your local Toyota dealer and have them run the VIN to see if your vehicle came equipped with a tow package.
Both types of harness kits plug into existing wiring plugs on the vehicle. No cutting or splicing. The difference is the harness for the Highlander with the tow package only has one connection to be pluged in to the vehicle's wiring harness. The Highlander without the tow package harness has more connections to the vehicles harness. The non tow package harnesses have a converter box that protects the tail light circuits on the non tow package models.
I have linked installation videos for all three harnesses for you to view.
